Bellflower

August 10th, 2011

One of things I enjoy about not having a “regular” (as in 9-5) job is that I can go see matinee movies whenever I want.  Today I saw a film called “Bellflower” and it blew me away.  I absolutely love that the filmmakers chose a style and just went with it (not to mention that it was their first film).  Seeing this movie has left me incredibly inspired – I loved everything from the lens choice to the colouring to the music.  Check it out if you get the chance, you won’t be sorry.

Sombres De Cirque

July 30th, 2011

If you follow my work, I’m sure you can tell that Alexandra is one of my favourite models – I think we’ve shot together 9 or 10 times in the last few years.  She came to me with the idea of doing a “high fashion clown” shoot with her and her boyfriend, Daniel.  She got a friend of hers, Ashley Joy Beck (who works with Cirque De Soleil), to do makeup and we borrowed the most amazing house to use as a location.  There were, however, two issues I had with the house – the first is that the ceilings were unusually low.  Now compound this with large tree branches and goat head taxidermy hanging from the ceilings and you get a challenging lighting situation.  The second issue was that the house was overly stimulating.  There was something new to see every time you turned around – from paintings covering both the walls AND the ceiling to all the taxidermy (including a full lion!), skeletons and hanging lanterns.  It was kind of one of those cases where you are faced with too many options in terms of location/background.  BUT, at the end of day, we had a super fun shoot and I even got over my long time fear of clowns.

Kalyn, who is newly signed to Envy Model Mgmt in LA, drove down from just outside Fresno a couple weeks ago to shoot.  We had a super chill day hanging out in Venice with Veronica Lane (on hair and makeup).

Madeline

July 21st, 2011

My shoot with Madeline marks not only my second attempt at bringing more “lifestyle” into my fashion work, but the first time in years that I’ve photographed a person using film.  I found some LONG expired (think 1996) 120 film and shot a roll of Madeline with my Holga (I also tried using a Diana camera that I found but I prefer the Holga).  I took some “straight” shots and then played around with double exposures a bit.

Way back in March I went to Nashville to see one of my all-time favourite bands, Godspeed You Black Emperor.  The day of the show we went to the Nashville Zoo and once again got a special “behind-the-scenes” mini-tour….
