M83

January 17th, 2012

Back in October I shot M83 for WHOA magazine’s January 2012 cover story.  The issue dropped today and it looks awesome – check it out!

This was one of those situations where I knew about the shoot weeks in advance (although no date had been finalized) and I had a bunch of ideas floating around in my head but as the days passed, the shoot kept getting pushed back and the amount of time I would have with him kept shrinking.  At the end of the day, I photographed Anthony at his rehearsal space in Hollywood and I had an hour with him (including set up time).  I ran though all my ideas the day before and I ended up shooting a half dozen different setups.  A few days before the shoot, I had been playing with some new lighting setups and I ended up doing some long exposures while “painting” with an LED light on a string.  I then combined the light painting images with some of the portraits (you can see the result of one of those images on the cover).

A few images that didn’t make it in the magazine are after the cut.

Sessions Magazine

January 3rd, 2012

The year seems to be starting off right.  I have two editorials in this month’s edition of Sessions magazine – In the Court of Miracles and Waiting for the Argonaut (which I wrote about here).  They both happen to feature the lovely Alexandra Mathews (which is really not surprising since her and I have worked together on at least a dozen editorials)

Alyena

December 25th, 2011

It’s been a good week for published work.  Both AVA magazine and Dollface magazine picked up images from an editorial I shot, “Valerie and her Week of Wonders” starring the lovely Alyena (can you believe she is only 12!)

Alyena - double exposure
We shot up near Mt.Wilson in the Angeles National Forest.  One of my regulars, Teal Druda, did hair and makeup and we collaborated with a young stylist, Erica Coronado, who was visiting from Florida.  I had brought one of my Polaroid cameras with me to take some double exposures but I quickly found out the film was no good and so I had to execute my double exposure vision in post.  Check out the editorial, as well as an interview I did for Dollface magazine.  A couple outtakes are after the jump.

Wanderlust in Tantalum

December 4th, 2011

Wanderlust (a fashion editorial I shot at an abandoned mini golf course – and which I blogged about here) is featured in this month’s Tantalum magazine.  There is also a pretty great interview with my stylist, Ja’Niya Walker.

Me + DPP

November 10th, 2011

I am the “cutting edge of the youth movement”, according to the cover of this month’s Digital Photo Pro.  I was kind of floored when, last December, the editor emailed me telling me they wanted to feature me in the magazine.  I was interviewed by Amanda Quintenz-Fielder, who wrote a really great article (she also writes for Rangefinder which I read all the time).  Good things are happening right now.

AVA Magazine

November 3rd, 2011

As I mentioned in my last post, my most recent fashion editorial was picked up by AVA magazine (started by two gals in Norway).  The editorial is called “Waiting for the Argonaut” and was inspired by Medea and Jason from Greek mythology.

I had originally planned to shoot the story on the shore of the Salton Sea, in the middle of the desert.  I rented an SUV, got a tent, and drove my team the 3 hours to the Salton Sea.  This is where I should mention that we just happen to plan the shoot for the hottest day of the year – it was about 115 degrees.  The day started off fine but as soon as we got the the shoot location and had unloaded all the gear, I came down with more than a mild case of heat stroke.  Needless to say, we drove back to Los Angeles without shooting, and in retrospect I’m glad it happened to me and not one of the models.  BUT this meant I needed to come up with a new plan – and that plan is what you’ll see in the story.  I think it turned out much better than the desert location.

Tantalum magazine

November 2nd, 2011

Over the last week or so I’ve had work in 4 different magazines.  Giuseppina (which I blogged about in my last post), Digital Photo Pro (which I’ll be writing about in the next couple days), AVA magazine, and Tantalum (an online fashion magazine).

An editorial I shot earlier this year (along with an interview), is in the current issue of Tantalum.  Here’s a little preview…

Check out the premier issue of a brand new Canadian magazine – Press the Fashion – for a 6-page editorial I shot at the end of last year.  Here’s a little preview…

This editorial is actually made up of mostly alternate images from a story called “Hold on to the Sun“.  If you’re in Ottawa, stop by Mags & Fags and pick up a copy!
