Last August, I photographed Genevieve (which I blogged about here). We both recently got hair cuts (hers a much more drastic change than mine) and so it was time for some new photos.

Back in October I shot M83 for WHOA magazine’s January 2012 cover story. The issue dropped today and it looks awesome – check it out!

This was one of those situations where I knew about the shoot weeks in advance (although no date had been finalized) and I had a bunch of ideas floating around in my head but as the days passed, the shoot kept getting pushed back and the amount of time I would have with him kept shrinking. At the end of the day, I photographed Anthony at his rehearsal space in Hollywood and I had an hour with him (including set up time). I ran though all my ideas the day before and I ended up shooting a half dozen different setups. A few days before the shoot, I had been playing with some new lighting setups and I ended up doing some long exposures while “painting” with an LED light on a string. I then combined the light painting images with some of the portraits (you can see the result of one of those images on the cover).

A few images that didn’t make it in the magazine are after the cut.

This last image was a complete experiment. We were messing around shooting through an old TV magnifier and hitting it with hot lights and strobes and these light patterns emerged. So when I worked with Anthony, I had him stand behind the magnifier and scream – and thankfully he really committed to it.

Brianna

Brianna is from New York and thankfully our schedules were such that we could shoot right before she left Los Angeles. I worked with my regular team to set up a fashion story which we shot down at the LA river. The following image actually isn’t from the editorial but something random and extra we did at the end of the shoot. When we started shooting, both Brianna and I mentioned how amazing it would be if she could just get all the clothing wet. Obviously this was not going to happen while she was wearing the clothing the stylist pulled BUT she had this sheer yellow shirt in her car and so at the end of the day she threw it on and laid in the water. Spontaneity and the willingness to play are two of my favourite qualities in a model.

I’ll be posting some images from the actual editorial in the next few weeks.

It’s Winter

It’s winter in southern California and to mark the ever so slight transition in the seasons, I decided to start building a lifestyle portfolio. My first attempt was a collaboration between my MUA, Jeannie Bolet, and I. The story is about four gals who wake up and spend a cold day hanging out at the beach. I have resisted shooting lifestyle for a while but this was a great experience and Jeannie and I are already planning at least one more (hopefully two) shoot before 2011 comes to a close. You can see the full story in my portfolio – some extra images are after the cut.

Angelina

It’s been a busy couple weeks. I photographed M83 for the cover of WHOA magazine’s January 2012 issue (so it will be a while before I can share those images), shot a fashion editorial with a visiting stylist, worked on some lighting tests for a music video, and had a handful of test shoots. One of those tests was with Angelina. Not only did it mark her first photo shoot but she is also the youngest model I have photographed. Working with her was awesome though and she has a haunted look about her (in photos) that I really love.

City and Colour

IT’S OUT!
My first (commissioned) magazine cover (for WHOA magazine) – and not only that but I got to photograph a musician whose music I love – Dallas Green (City and Colour).

When I found out that I needed to provide the editor with 7-10 cover options and 5-10 additional story images, I got a little nervous. When I found out I only had 2 hours to work with Dallas, I started freaking out. But then I realized that this did not mean I needed to shoot 10 different set-ups, and I started to relax a little. But I most definitely went through my entire set-up the day before and wrote down all my settings and marked where every light was to placed for the different studio setups. Sometimes I like to fly by the seat of my pants – this, however, was not one of those times. The day of the shoot I had butterflies in my stomach up to the point I started shooting – and then everything around me faded into the background and I just did my job – which also left me a little room to improvise.
