AVA Magazine

November 3rd, 2011

As I mentioned in my last post, my most recent fashion editorial was picked up by AVA magazine (started by two gals in Norway).  The editorial is called “Waiting for the Argonaut” and was inspired by Medea and Jason from Greek mythology.

I had originally planned to shoot the story on the shore of the Salton Sea, in the middle of the desert.  I rented an SUV, got a tent, and drove my team the 3 hours to the Salton Sea.  This is where I should mention that we just happen to plan the shoot for the hottest day of the year – it was about 115 degrees.  The day started off fine but as soon as we got the the shoot location and had unloaded all the gear, I came down with more than a mild case of heat stroke.  Needless to say, we drove back to Los Angeles without shooting, and in retrospect I’m glad it happened to me and not one of the models.  BUT this meant I needed to come up with a new plan – and that plan is what you’ll see in the story.  I think it turned out much better than the desert location.

Tantalum magazine

November 2nd, 2011

Over the last week or so I’ve had work in 4 different magazines.  Giuseppina (which I blogged about in my last post), Digital Photo Pro (which I’ll be writing about in the next couple days), AVA magazine, and Tantalum (an online fashion magazine).

An editorial I shot earlier this year (along with an interview), is in the current issue of Tantalum.  Here’s a little preview…

Wanderlust

September 20th, 2011

A few months ago I posted photos from an abandoned miniature golf course I visited.  I fell in love with this place and put together a fashion story to shoot there. Often when I explore abandoned locations, I feel a sense of stillness upon entering the site – and this time was no different.  Some people find it very eerie, but I think it’s rather peaceful.  When I think of miniature golf I think of first dates and family outings in the summer and I wanted to channel that carefree feeling.  I wanted the images to feel old, like something I might have found, forgotten, on the ground while exploring.  The full story is in my portfolio – these are some alternate shots.

Neutral Territory

September 12th, 2011

A few months ago I shot a fashion editorial based around the idea of neutral colours.  I called it “Neutral Territory”.  It stars Cassidy – this was the first time I had worked with her and she is now one of my favourites.  The full editorial is in my portfolio. Here are some alternate shots.

Disney Concert Hall

I shot a fashion editorial at Disney Concert Hall – it’s pretty phenomenal architecturally – and I loved incorporating the structure (and reflections) into the shoot.  The full editorial can be seen here.  Some alternate images after the cut.

Sombres De Cirque

July 30th, 2011

If you follow my work, I’m sure you can tell that Alexandra is one of my favourite models – I think we’ve shot together 9 or 10 times in the last few years.  She came to me with the idea of doing a “high fashion clown” shoot with her and her boyfriend, Daniel.  She got a friend of hers, Ashley Joy Beck (who works with Cirque De Soleil), to do makeup and we borrowed the most amazing house to use as a location.  There were, however, two issues I had with the house – the first is that the ceilings were unusually low.  Now compound this with large tree branches and goat head taxidermy hanging from the ceilings and you get a challenging lighting situation.  The second issue was that the house was overly stimulating.  There was something new to see every time you turned around – from paintings covering both the walls AND the ceiling to all the taxidermy (including a full lion!), skeletons and hanging lanterns.  It was kind of one of those cases where you are faced with too many options in terms of location/background.  BUT, at the end of day, we had a super fun shoot and I even got over my long time fear of clowns.

Madeline

July 21st, 2011

My shoot with Madeline marks not only my second attempt at bringing more “lifestyle” into my fashion work, but the first time in years that I’ve photographed a person using film.  I found some LONG expired (think 1996) 120 film and shot a roll of Madeline with my Holga (I also tried using a Diana camera that I found but I prefer the Holga).  I took some “straight” shots and then played around with double exposures a bit.
