A Step Backwards

December 8th, 2011

In life, especially in the creative industry, you will come across people who talk a big game (to the point of sounding arrogant) but simply don’t yet have the talent to back it up.  I fell for one of these “sales pitches” a few weeks ago.  I had been talking to a hair stylist who was looking to completely rebuild her portfolio.  I’m always on the lookout for talented people to collaborate with and so I was totally open to working with her.  She kept talking about how she had an incredible team, we were going to have amazing couture wardrobe, etc etc etc.  Naturally, I was pretty stoked – I thought we were going to create this amazing fashion/beauty story.  In the end it turned out to be completely disorganized (the looks weren’t planned out ahead of time) and unfortunately kind of a waste of a day.  It felt like I had gone back in time – to when I was just shooting tests for the sake of shooting – to practice and gain confidence.  That’s not to say I didn’t take any good photos – just nothing that I can see making it into my portfolio.  It’s also not to say I don’t still practice – I like to practice new techniques all the time – I just also like things to be organized and beneficial for everyone involved.

At least it wasn’t a total loss – I did meet my newest muse (Lulu).

Wanderlust

September 20th, 2011

A few months ago I posted photos from an abandoned miniature golf course I visited.  I fell in love with this place and put together a fashion story to shoot there. Often when I explore abandoned locations, I feel a sense of stillness upon entering the site – and this time was no different.  Some people find it very eerie, but I think it’s rather peaceful.  When I think of miniature golf I think of first dates and family outings in the summer and I wanted to channel that carefree feeling.  I wanted the images to feel old, like something I might have found, forgotten, on the ground while exploring.  The full story is in my portfolio – these are some alternate shots.

The idea for a “golden” beauty editorial had been floating around in my head for a while.  A couple weeks ago, I was finally able to make it a reality.  It feels good to get ideas out of my mind – makes room for new ones to obsess over…

Genevieve

August 18th, 2011

I am obsessed with freckles right now.  So, when I saw Genevieve’s photos, I just had to shoot her.  I wanted to keep the makeup clean to show off Genevieve’s skin, so the shoot became all about the hair.  We decided to do 2 different looks – curly hair and straight hair – and I also wanted to use fans to move the hair around and make the beauty story a little more dynamic.  Unfortunately, we couldn’t quite achieve the image I had in my mind with the wind sources we had available, so I had to learn to do some light compositing to add extra hair in.  Luckily, a good friend of mine, Josh Ross, walked me through the basics via iChat.

Sombres De Cirque

July 30th, 2011

If you follow my work, I’m sure you can tell that Alexandra is one of my favourite models – I think we’ve shot together 9 or 10 times in the last few years.  She came to me with the idea of doing a “high fashion clown” shoot with her and her boyfriend, Daniel.  She got a friend of hers, Ashley Joy Beck (who works with Cirque De Soleil), to do makeup and we borrowed the most amazing house to use as a location.  There were, however, two issues I had with the house – the first is that the ceilings were unusually low.  Now compound this with large tree branches and goat head taxidermy hanging from the ceilings and you get a challenging lighting situation.  The second issue was that the house was overly stimulating.  There was something new to see every time you turned around – from paintings covering both the walls AND the ceiling to all the taxidermy (including a full lion!), skeletons and hanging lanterns.  It was kind of one of those cases where you are faced with too many options in terms of location/background.  BUT, at the end of day, we had a super fun shoot and I even got over my long time fear of clowns.
