Santa Barbara Zoo…

…or The Day I Did Not Go Hot Air Ballooning.

I went up to Ventura a couple weeks ago as we were supposed to go on an early morning hot air balloon ride.  However, the fog rolled in and we weren’t able to go.  We were only about 3o minutes from Santa Barbara so we decided to go to the zoo instead.

Ima (the) Kangaroo

July 20th, 2011

Way back in March I went to Nashville to see one of my all-time favourite bands, Godspeed You Black Emperor.  The day of the show we went to the Nashville Zoo and once again got a special “behind-the-scenes” mini-tour….

LAPD K9 dogs in PDN!

July 13th, 2011

If you check out the August Issue of PDN magazine (specifically page 69), you’ll see two images from my series of portraits of the LAPD K9 dogs.  The rest of the images in the issue are amazing – it’s nice to be in such good company!

Giant Crabs

March 29th, 2011

A couple weekends ago, I took a day trip down the Long Beach to go to the Aquarium of the Pacific.  It was difficult using my Canon inside the aquarium as it was extremely dark (for the few shots I did take indoors I had to pump up the ISO to 3200 – which is not my favourite thing to do), so I actually ended up using my mobile phone to take the majority of my photos that day.  As those images still only reside on my mobile, here are some from my “big girl” camera…

Pink Flamingos

March 14th, 2011

In January I visited the Los Angeles zoo.  Going to the zoo reminds me of childhood and so I decided to process the images with that in mind.  Actually, it was that – combined with my love of square format photos from the 1970’s.

A Box of Surprises

November 29th, 2010

I was going though a box of old negatives last week (yes, a box – 10 years ago when I first started taking photos I didn’t really care about properly storing my negatives) and I came across a photo I took of my (now) 13 year old dog, Yukon.

This photo was taken in 2000, with my Pentax K1000 when I was first learning the basics of everything photography (exposure, composition, negative development, and printing).  I can almost relegated the negative to the box because the image was out of focus.  However, a decade later and this image immediately grabbed my attention while looking through the negatives.  I now like the fact that it’s blurry, and that 10 years of being in a box have added some scratches – it makes it feel reminiscent of a dream, which fits my current aesthetic.  Every so often, I like going through my old images – not only do I get a chuckle out of what I was photographing back then, but it helps me remember who I was and where I came from as a photographer.

Freyja

June 30th, 2010

I’ve always thought it would be magical to find a puppy.  I’d be walking down the street, hear a noise in the shrubbery and out would run a puppy!  In retrospect, this was a rather naive train of thought because that’s not how it happened at all.

Creatures Great and Small

June 12th, 2010

Besides exploring abandoned buildings and getting bit by ticks, while in Nashville, I also went to the zoo.  Thanks to some sweet hook-ups, we got to go on a ‘behind-the-scenes’ tour, which involved such things as hand feeding elephants and giraffes!  It was probably one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had.  Anyone who knows me, knows that I am crazy about animals so having an elephant take carrots out of my hand pretty much made my trip.
