Genevieve – chapter 2

February 5th, 2012

Last August, I photographed Genevieve (which I blogged about here).  We both recently got hair cuts (hers a much more drastic change than mine) and so it was time for some new photos.

M83

January 17th, 2012

Back in October I shot M83 for WHOA magazine’s January 2012 cover story.  The issue dropped today and it looks awesome – check it out!

This was one of those situations where I knew about the shoot weeks in advance (although no date had been finalized) and I had a bunch of ideas floating around in my head but as the days passed, the shoot kept getting pushed back and the amount of time I would have with him kept shrinking.  At the end of the day, I photographed Anthony at his rehearsal space in Hollywood and I had an hour with him (including set up time).  I ran though all my ideas the day before and I ended up shooting a half dozen different setups.  A few days before the shoot, I had been playing with some new lighting setups and I ended up doing some long exposures while “painting” with an LED light on a string.  I then combined the light painting images with some of the portraits (you can see the result of one of those images on the cover).

A few images that didn’t make it in the magazine are after the cut.

Laura Kirkpatrick

January 4th, 2012

A couple weeks before Christmas I had the pleasure of shooting with Laura Kirkpatrick.  You may recognize her from America’s Next Top Model – she was the runner up on cycle 13 and she was most recently on the All-Stars cycle (where she placed 4th).  We shot at a private residence in Hollywood and I was going for a slight “old Hollywood” vibe.

Sessions Magazine

January 3rd, 2012

The year seems to be starting off right.  I have two editorials in this month’s edition of Sessions magazine – In the Court of Miracles and Waiting for the Argonaut (which I wrote about here).  They both happen to feature the lovely Alexandra Mathews (which is really not surprising since her and I have worked together on at least a dozen editorials)

Hello 2012

January 1st, 2012

Hello 2012.  To usher in the new year I thought I’d share some images from my last shoot of 2011.  I worked with two of my favourite people, Chelsea (on makeup) and Ashley (on hair) and we shot with Megan from No Ties Model Mgmt (it’s hard to believe she’s only 16!).  We started with some clean makeup looks…

Alyena

December 25th, 2011

It’s been a good week for published work.  Both AVA magazine and Dollface magazine picked up images from an editorial I shot, “Valerie and her Week of Wonders” starring the lovely Alyena (can you believe she is only 12!)

Alyena - double exposure
We shot up near Mt.Wilson in the Angeles National Forest.  One of my regulars, Teal Druda, did hair and makeup and we collaborated with a young stylist, Erica Coronado, who was visiting from Florida.  I had brought one of my Polaroid cameras with me to take some double exposures but I quickly found out the film was no good and so I had to execute my double exposure vision in post.  Check out the editorial, as well as an interview I did for Dollface magazine.  A couple outtakes are after the jump.

Brianna

December 22nd, 2011

Brianna is from New York and thankfully our schedules were such that we could shoot right before she left Los Angeles.  I worked with my regular team to set up a fashion story which we shot down at the LA river.  The following image actually isn’t from the editorial but something random and extra we did at the end of the shoot.  When we started shooting, both Brianna and I mentioned how amazing it would be if she could just get all the clothing wet.  Obviously this was not going to happen while she was wearing the clothing the stylist pulled BUT she had this sheer yellow shirt in her car and so at the end of the day she threw it on and laid in the water.  Spontaneity and the willingness to play are two of my favourite qualities in a model.

I’ll be posting some images from the actual editorial in the next few weeks.

It’s Winter

December 12th, 2011

It’s winter in southern California and to mark the ever so slight transition in the seasons, I decided to start building a lifestyle portfolio.  My first attempt was a collaboration between my MUA, Jeannie Bolet, and I.  The story is about four gals who wake up and spend a cold day hanging out at the beach.  I have resisted shooting lifestyle for a while but this was a great experience and Jeannie and I are already planning at least one more (hopefully two) shoot before 2011 comes to a close.  You can see the full story in my portfolio – some extra images are after the cut.

A Step Backwards

December 8th, 2011

In life, especially in the creative industry, you will come across people who talk a big game (to the point of sounding arrogant) but simply don’t yet have the talent to back it up.  I fell for one of these “sales pitches” a few weeks ago.  I had been talking to a hair stylist who was looking to completely rebuild her portfolio.  I’m always on the lookout for talented people to collaborate with and so I was totally open to working with her.  She kept talking about how she had an incredible team, we were going to have amazing couture wardrobe, etc etc etc.  Naturally, I was pretty stoked – I thought we were going to create this amazing fashion/beauty story.  In the end it turned out to be completely disorganized (the looks weren’t planned out ahead of time) and unfortunately kind of a waste of a day.  It felt like I had gone back in time – to when I was just shooting tests for the sake of shooting – to practice and gain confidence.  That’s not to say I didn’t take any good photos – just nothing that I can see making it into my portfolio.  It’s also not to say I don’t still practice – I like to practice new techniques all the time – I just also like things to be organized and beneficial for everyone involved.

At least it wasn’t a total loss – I did meet my newest muse (Lulu).
